The Last 15 Years

A DOG ON HIS MASTER
by Billy Collins

As young as I look,
I am growing older faster than he,
seven to one
is the ratio they tend to say.

Whatever the number,
I will pass him one day
and take the lead
the way I do on our walks in the woods.

And if this ever manages
to cross his mind,
it would be the sweetest
shadow I have ever cast on snow or grass.

In memory of Patsy, who passed away May 8, 2015, age 17 or 18

I'm sorry for your loss.

I just saw you read that poem on My Dog. I liked the poem so much I played it back a number a times to write it down and found your website. Thank you for the poems.

I have an eight year old Bichon named Bruno, I guess he looks like a she and people always ask "What's her name" I say "Bruno" making sure I say it in a booming voice so there's no mistake. They always laugh at his name, and I always have to respond with "He has a brawny name to match his personality"

I've calculated when Bruno and my age cross, next year in June, I haven't decided how we will celebrate but we will.

Dogs are such basic creatures that guide us spiritually through life, they teach us what's really important. We live longer only because it takes us longer to figure it out.

She is probably scoping out a nice place in the woods for you two to walk together again......
